A Review Of The Sony PS3 Slim

By Claire Greenway

The Sony PS3 Slim is Sony's latest version of its prized games console.

The Slim is pretty much the same as before, but the design has gone under
a transformation.

As said before, the design on the PS3 Slim has been modified from the old
version. The Slim is 33% smaller, 36% lighter and 34% less power consuming
than the old PS3.

The touch-sensitive buttons have been removed by Sony, meaning that the Slim now utilises
standard push-buttons instead. The master power switch at the back has also been removed.

One of the changes that I dislike is the remove of the PS3's stylish gloss
that used to make the console look quite desirable. Also with the "Playstation 3"
writing changed to just an etching of the PS3, the Slim has turned quite,
well, dull.

Gone also is the nice silver chrome trim on the PS3 Slim. Maybe the simplifying
of the design has been Sony's attempt to make it cheaper to manufacture and sell,
following the losses they made with the sales of some of the old PS3s.

Fortunately, the two USB, HDMI, AV multi-out, ethernet and optical out ports on the
Slim remain as they were on the last version. Luckily there were no sacrifices made
there. The big power cable has been slimmed down to a two-pin cable.

The Blu-Ray drive remains on the Slim, which lets you play the movies in
a stunning 1080p! Now the PS3 Slim can also bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD
Master Audio to a receiver through an HDMI cable.

There is a bit of a problem with the PS3 Slim's CD and DVD playback; there is more
audio jitter when these formats are played then there was on the last version of PS3.
However, the DVD upscaling feature seems to overshadow this all, and you'll probably
be so impressed at the video quality that you don't even notice the little sound defects.

This all begs the question; should I buy the PS3 Slim? At almost 250, the Slim
is well priced in Playstation standards, but in comparison to the 360 and Wii,
it may seem a little pricey. However, it's worth to take into consideration the
fact that the Slim has a built-in BluRay player, and in many cases normal
BluRay players are actually more expensive than the Slim. If you've got the money
and you're after a gaming treat, this Slim will do well for you. However, if you
already have the old PS3, there's not really any reason why you shouldn't just
remain on that. - 29852
