Author-director Schepisi informs his tale with nearly documentary like actuality, eloquently assaulting the format of trial by story that made Chamberlain and her spouse the most maligned couple in Australia. Streep and Neill are heartbreakingly excellent. Cast includes Meryl Streep, Sam Neill, Bruce Myles, Charles Tingwell, Notch Tate, and Lewis Fitzgerald. (121 minutes, 1988)
Border Shootout: Ignorant rancher is made deputy in Arizona boundary town that's tired of aging sheriff Ford; however the townspeople's lynching of supposed rustlers brings about instant conflict. Here is an excellent Western plot from the Elmore Leonard novel that is wrecked by amateurish production. Cast includes Cody Glenn, Jeff Kaake, Glenn Ford, Elizabeth Rohovit, Michael Horse, Russell Todd, Michael Ansara, and Michael Forrest. (110 minutes, 1990)
The Good Shepherd: Clutching tale of a spiritually censored youthful guy who is enlisted at Yale to do espionage work throughout WW2 and then to join the secret intelligence agency that would eventually become the CIA, even though it means an astronomical sacrifice to his family life. Damon is phenomenal and a well selected cast fills all the roles very well. Cast includes Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, Alec Baldwin, Tammy Blanchard, Billy Crudup, Robert De Niro, and John Turturro. Cul-De-Sac: Macabre comedy in regards to 2 injured gangsters who terrorize middle-aged milquetoast and his gorgeous spouse. Not a total winner, although excellent cast and trendy direction make it a good movie.
