So, looks aren't a factor because mages always look cool...so you're going to pick your race based on racials instead? Well, this guide is here to help. It can be hard to know how handy a racial is based on the rather vague descriptions, and what works early won't work at endgame. We'll discuss each race and why or why not they are the best race for mage.
First up for discussion is Undead. Will of the Forsaken is/was possibly the best PvP racial in the game until Patch 3.3, where it will be nerfed to share a 45 second cooldown with PvP trinket effects. This means that the only thing that Undead is best at now is looking cool while they cast. And while this doesn't effect the use of WotF in PvE, it's not like WotF is really a big deal for PvE anyways. Skip undead if you want the best.
Blood elves are the second race we will talk about. Arcane Torrent is the primary racial of note here. For PvP applications, it is one of the better ones around; an extra silence is always a great thing to have. For PvE, the mana regen from Arcane Torrent is great while you are leveling, but at max level you shouldn't be having mana issues anyways, making it mostly useless.
Troll is the last race on the Horde mage list, and have always been the least popular. That may change soon though. Da Voodoo Shuffle is a useful talent for PvP, reducing the duration of snares and roots. And Berserking is possibly the best Mage racial in the game. In PvP it is another powerful haste buff, allowing for immense burst. And in PvE it is another cooldown to pop often, providing the best DPS improvement of any racial.
So in the end, Horde racials aren't that hard to puzzle out. Undead is nerfed down to normal levels come 3.3, and isn't good for PvE either way. Blood Elves do fine for leveling and PvP, but lack anything handy for PvE. And the ever-unpopular troll has a fantastic racial that is greatly valuable in PvP AND PvE content both. For the first time in WoW, Troll is the best.
I'll wrap this up by reminding you to pick on racials only if you don't mind the looks of the race. The benefit of a given racial is relatively minuscule; talents, gear, and skill are all infinitely more important. In the end, Blizzard has been working to reduce racials almost since the beginning, with nerfs and the removal of certain class-based racial abilities. It's only a matter of time before all of them are barely worth noting, so don't play something you can't stand for a minor, temporary buff. - 29852
