The Little Theatre of Jean Renoir: Quartet of little stories in reference to human respectability and beneficence of country living (instead of subsisting in a dehumanized city forest). Renoir's celluloid swan melody might not be amid his best, however still has much to offer. Belle of the 90's: Mae struts, harmonizes 'My Old Flame," and heats up a gallery of admirers in entertaining illustration of Western humor. Cast includes Mae West, Roger Pryor, Johnny Mack Brown, Warren Hymer, and Duke Ellington Orchestra. (73 minutes, 1934)

The Guru: Harmless comedy in reference to an Indian dance professor (Mistry) who comes to America desiring popularity and fortune in the movie industry. As an alternative, he lands a job in a porno film, is befriended by its gorgeous megastar (who's truly an "excellent gal" leading a triple life), then accidentally gets to be a star as the "expert of sex." Some ludicrous gags, a likable leading guy, and excellent joke performances by Graham and Tomei improve this choppy feel-good flick. Cast includes Cast includes Heather Graham, Marisa Tomei, Jimi Mistry, Michael McKean, Christine Baranski, Rob Morrow, Emil Marwa, Malachy McCourt, Ajay Naidu, and Anita Gillette. (91 minutes, 2003)

Patton: Milestone in biographies finds Scott vivid as offbeat, radiant General George Patton, whose temper often interrupts with his request throughout WW2. Malden comparably impressive as General Omar Bradley in intelligently written, finely wrought biographical battle drama. Cast includes George C. Scott, Karl Malden, Stephen Youthful, Michael Hefty, Frank Latimore, James Edwards, Lawrence Dobkin, Michael Bates, and Tim Considine. (169 minutes, 1970)

The Nutty Professor: Sherman Klump is a goofy chemistry professor who's grossly obese. When he meets an attractive instructing assistant, he's inspired to try his chemistry knowledge on DNA, reorganizing himself into a super stud. Eddie is appealing and persuading as the prof, and humorous as his doppelganger. Cast includes Eddie Murphy, Jada Pinkett, James Coburn, Dave Chappelle, Larry Miller, and John Ales. (95 minutes, 1996)

Hail Caesar: Horrible music-megastar wannabe (Chamber) is in love with an offensive debutante, whose dad is plotting to undermine an upcoming concert. Not a very good film. Cast includes Anthony Michael Chamber, Robert Downey, Jr., Frank Gorshin, Samuel L. Jackson, Judd Nelson, and Nicholas Pryor. (97 minutes, 1993)

Soapdish: Farcical comedy in reference to a soap opera monarch who's trailing her clutch--on the show, and her life. Field and Kline are a treat to watch playing larger than life characters, however Whoopi is trashed, Downey is miscast, and the script (by Robert Harling and Andrew Bergman) imagines "anxious" equals "funny." Cast includes Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Robert Downey, Jr., Cathy Moriarty, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Shue, Carrie Fisher, Garry Marshall, Teri Hatcher, Paul Johansson, Costas Mandylor, Stephen Nichols, Kathy Najimy, and Ben Stein. (95 minutes, 1991)

Downstairs: Crackling, adult drama in regards to a heel who rests and cajoles his way from one prosperous home to a different-utilizing both the mistresses of the homes upstairs and the servants downstairs. Gilbert transfers a bold acting job that more than some other reclaims his maligned notoriety as a "talkie" performer. Cast includes John Gilbert, Paul Lukas, Virginia Bruce, Hedda Basket, Reginald Owen, and Olga Bafamilyova. (77 minutes, 1932)
